Can we just talk about the daunting task of laundry for a minute? There are approximately 10 seconds out of each month that every single piece of clothing in my house is clean. It is the most glorious, self-affirming 10 seconds of my life. For that brief snippet in time, I am on top of the world and feel like I can do anything. Now let’s not mention the fact that the last load has been in the dryer for the third time to “unwrinkle” because I got distracted by other responsibilities or decided waiting for naptime was a much better option in order to prevent complete destruction by my 2 foot toddler whose favorite pastime is messing up piles of neatly, folded clothes.
Such mundane tasks seem just that some days. Mundane. Ordinary. Another pile of dirty laundry to wash, another load of dishes to throw in the dishwasher, another diaper changed, another meal cooked... (Why must they always want THREE meals a day anyways??) The list goes on and on and sometimes seems endless.
But what if we thought of these tasks for what they truly are…serving. We are serving our families, serving others, and inevitably serving God. Sure these tasks aren’t always glamorous or fun. But God tells us in Colossians 3:23-24, “Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters, since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving.”
What a great reminder that I need daily! To be rewarded by the Lord for this everyday stuff? I hope that is as encouraging to you as it is to me during this season of life! So carry on, my sweet friends who feel like they are going through the motions. You are working for the Lord. And that is anything but ordinary.
